ARCHITECTURAL GLASS
Anthony Jamieson Design Studio
from www.anthonyjamieson.ca:
Anthony Jamieson Designs began as a collaboration between two established glass artists, Michael Anthony and Bill Jamieson. Alongside apprentices AJ Kutchaw and Andrew Ferneyhough, we design and create original architectural glass features for residential and commercial clients out of our studio on Mayne Island, BC.
From our earliest recollections, we have been fascinated by the play of light. We enjoy pushing the limits of what is possible technically with glass. The alchemy of heat, movement and timing combined with serendipity and technical precision must come together to achieve a fully realized, finished work. Sometimes what seems a “mistake” often becomes a new direction of work as well as an unrealized success. We strive to create work that engages other people and which continually challenges and reflects our perceptions of the world around us.
Our studio has over 30 years of experience learning and exploring new glass forming techniques. Using our chosen medium of architectural glass, we use a combination of sand and ceramic fiber to create our one-of-a-kind panels. Each panel goes under rigorous quality control before and after tempering, and are individually polished and inspected before installation.
Our work may be used for interior and exterior doors and windows, partition or feature screens, shower walls and doors, railings and balustrades. All of our work meets safety and building code requirements.
We have a large roster of collaborators that we work with outside of the studio. We regularly commission First Nations artists to cast their beautiful designs in our glass. We have also built partnerships with glaziers, door and window makers, metal crafters, wood workers, and other trade professionals to bring the best possible design solution to your space.
All commissions start with a sketch. After meeting our client, viewing the site, and getting inspired, we begin to sketch out our preliminary ideas. Eventually we settle on one design and the image is then drawn life-size. The full-size drawing gets transferred onto our mold-making material, which is then cut out and shaped. The glass is cast in a kiln on a bed of smooth sand. Sometimes we work with the sand to create textures and patterns. The mold and glass are then carefully placed onto the prepared bed of sand. The glass is then fired to a temperature of between 1445°-1495° F. This allows the glass to slowly slump pushing the fibre mold materials into the glass, while allowing the glass to take on the detail of the sand bed.
The Atlantic Restaurant,Universal Studios, Orlando
"Over the past 5 years, we have quietly been working away on a massive undertaking with Universal Creative. Next time you find yourself in Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida, make sure to visit the Atlantic Restaurant. Our contributions range from coloured art glass inserts in the main entrance, towering mermaids, curved balustrade glass, and a number of small details all throughout the restaurant.
This project tested and expanded our capacity for large scale fabrication, honed our ability to work remotely, gave us a new appreciation for logistics, and brought together a number of creatives to make something beautiful.
All in all, we have cast and shipped over 80 panels for this project, and we are so happy to be able to finally share these with you!"
